How to make a flower garland head dress

Greenery is an important feature of Midsummer’s Eve. Birch tree branches are used as decor and flowers are gathered to decorate the midsummer pole and to make flower garlands to wear throughout the day. Follow our simple guide to discover how to make your own flower garland head dress. You can also download the guide HERE.

You will need:
  • Scissors
  • Floral tape
  • Floral (or other) wire
  • Small fresh flowers and foliage (large flowers are generally too heavy)
What to do:
  1. Cut a piece of wire that fits round the crown of the head of the person who will be wearing the garland PLUS 15cm
  2. Wrap floral tape round the wire so it is all covered
  3. Make a loop at one end of the wire and secure twisting the wire back on itself
  4. Bend back the wire to make a hook in the other end at the point where it will be secured through the loop
  5. Check that the wire circle fits, slightly too small is better than too large
  6. Open out the circle ready to add the flowers
  7. Make mini bouquets from your flowers securing each one tightly with floral tape round the stems
  8. Work left to right if you are right handed and right to left if you are left handed
  9. Attach each mini bouquet to the wire using floral tape until the wire has flowers along its whole length between the securing loop and ‘hook’
  10. Make the garland into a circle and secure the ends, it‘s now ready to wear
  11. If you don’t have enough flowers for a full garland then simply wear the garland so the section with flowers is at the front or add greenery such as ivy from the garden
