At Peter’s Yard, we want to offer you a modern incarnation of the traditional coffee house: a place where like-minded people can meet and put the world to rights, enjoying great coffee and simple straightforward food but most of all, enjoying each other’s company. In Sweden, we call this Fika. Fika is a social institution, meaning to enjoy meeting friends, family, colleagues or loved ones over a coffee and a bite to eat.

Taking time out to talk, is just as important today as it was in Samuel Johnson’s time when he called a coffee house “more than a place that sells coffee: a coffee-house is also an idea, a way of life, a mode of socializing, a philosophy” (“The Coffee House, a Cultural History” by Markman Ellis).

We love being situated right at the heart of where people live, study and work and like to feel part of our local, national and global community. Being so close to the University of Edinburgh and near the heart of the City means we get the chance to meet a wide mix of fascinating people who visit us day in and day out.
